A terrorist attack on a mosque in New Zeland

A terrorist attack on a mosque in New Zeland

To God we belong, and to God is our return.
No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. When Muslims stand up to pray in congregation, we’re often reminded to pray as if it’s our last prayer. I don’t think any of us will need reminding today.

Al-Madinah Center and muslims around the world are grieved by the heinous shootings at the New Zealand Mosques. Our prayers go out to the victims, their families and the people of New Zealand during this terrible tragedy.

An-Nour Mosque

Pray for our brothers and sisters in NZ who lost their lives, their loved ones, their health and security today. Don’t forget about them tomorrow. Don’t forget about the families from the Quebec City Mosque. Don’t forget about other brothers and sisters around the world whose mosques, churches, synagogues, temples have been attacked. Our hearts are as large as we want to make them. Our empathy need never run out.

As we witnessed in the aftermath of the Quebec Mosque Shooting, attacks against places of worship are especially sinister and represent an attack against an entire community’s consciousness. We also call upon elected officials to pursue a strategy against islamophobia, online hate speech, and online hate platforms, which has contributed to this and other similar attacks, so that Canadians can be protected from hate speech and incitement.

If you’re too anxious to go out today, take care of yourself and don’t feel guilty. God is with you.
If you’re going to Friday prayer today, go without fear, go with gratitude. God is with you, every step.

Non-Muslim friends: if you’d like to show solidarity and sympathy, consider donating to the victims and, if you can, bringing flowers or a card to a mosque near you. These gestures matter, they help us feel safe in our own neighborhoods.

Everyone, please be mindful in how you speak or share news of this tragedy or any related discussions. Let’s not multiply trauma and anxiety through carelessness. Let’s have dignity in our grief. Let’s be kind and generous.

Together, we can reject hatred, and call out discourses and policies that enable it.

In Solidarity with the Jewish community of Pittsburgh

In Solidarity with the Jewish community of Pittsburgh

In Solidarity

On behalf of Al-Madinah Center, As-Salam Mosque, Association Salam (Peace) of Montreal, IQRA Foundation and the Muslim community of downtown Montréal, we would like to express our sincere sadness and sorry for this barbaric act in the Pittsburgh synagogue last Saturday.  We truly believe that such hatred shall have no place in North America in the twenty first century. We do believe that this act of hate is not only directed against the local Jewish community in Pittsburgh but it is a terrorism attack against all faiths and the values that we hold as peoples of faith all over the world.

Muslims in Montreal and all over the world condemn this act and all acts of hate against any individuals or groups. The growing hate speech is alarming. We are witnessing the rise of bigoted actions against faith groups and other minorities.

We want every member of the Jewish community to know that we will continue to stand in solidarity and are willing to help however needed. Finally, we believe that Allah tests humanity in many ways in order to bring them closer to Him. “Give good tiding to the patient, Who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to God, and indeed to Him we will return’”. We are here to support you and stand with you during these difficult times; as allies, friends, neighbors and grand sons of Abraham.

In peace, with full sincerity and respect,

  • Association Salam (Paix) de Montreal
  • Centre Al-Madinah
  • As-Salam Mosque

Zakat ul Fitr is $10/person in Canada in 2018

Zakat ul Fitr is $10/person in Canada in 2018.

Sadaqat al-fitr is obligatory upon every Muslim who is self-supporting, if he has one saa’ or more than he needs of food for himself and his family on the day and night of Eid.

The basis for that is the report narrated from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined zakaat al-fitr, a saa’ of dates, or a saa’ of barley, upon all the Muslims, slave and free, male and female, young and old, and he commanded that it be paid before the people went out to pray.” Agreed upon; this version was narrated by al-Bukhaari.

And Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri narrated: “We used to pay zakaat al-fitr when the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was alive, a saa’ of food or a saa’ of dates or a saa’ of barley or a saa’ of raisins or a saa’ of dried yoghurt.” Agreed upon.
